Job Opportunity- Police Officer (Full Time)

 The Tyngsborough Police Department is seeking highly motivated, community-oriented, and service-minded full-time police officers. The Tyngsborough Police Department is a progressive, community-oriented police department consisting of 27 full-time police officers, 10 Special Police Officers, and 7 public safety dispatchers that provides both traditional and non-traditional police service to a Town of approximately 12,00 residents located in the Merrimack Valley.

Starting base salary range is $56,603.14 to $87,700.80 commensurate with years of experience and education. Additional compensation is available through shift differential and longevity pay for qualified applicants, as well as through special event details and overtime assignments. A generous benefits package including but not limited to paid time off and health insurance is provided.

In order to eligible for appointment, a police officer candidate must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen (by birth or naturalization);
  • Be at least 21 Years of age as of the date of appointment;
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license;
  • Possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate;
  • Be a non-smoker;
  • Candidates may not have any felony convictions or equivalent convictions that would be a felony in Massachusetts;
  • Have a strong character background;
  • Have the ability to pass (or have successfully completed) the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Academy in order to achieve basic certification as a police officer (if certified elsewhere, must be able to obtain a waiver from the MPTC);
  • Must be eligible to obtain a Massachusetts Class “A” License to Carry a Firearm;
  • Be willing and able to meet the duties and obligations of a Tyngsborough Police Officer.

All candidates must understand that these basic, minimum qualifications do not guarantee candidates an offer of employment. All candidates will be assessed for their fitness for the position through an entire selection process which also includes interviews, an extensive background investigation, medical evaluation, psychological screening, and Physical Abilities Test (PAT).

Recruitment Process

The Tyngsborough Police Department welcomes you to apply for the position of police officer with the Town of Tyngsborough.  The recruitment process requires a potential candidate to successfully complete the selection process which includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following steps:

Cover Letter and Resume:

Interested candidates are required to submit a cover letter and resume to hr@tyngsboroughma.gov no later than 4:00 p.m. Friday, December 15th, 2023.  Candidates who have graduated a full-time MPTC approved police academy will be given preferential status.

Interview Panel:

The interview panel will be held at a time to be determined based on the current staffing needs of the Tyngsborough department.  Candidates that are invited to participate will be given advanced notice and further instructions at the necessary time.  No prior police experience is necessary to participate.  There may also be a writing assignment given to candidates at the time of the interview.

Physical abilities testing (“PAT”):

The PAT will take place at a time to be determined after the interview panel.  Further information relative to the PAT will be provided to each candidate.  Please take this PAT seriously.  Any candidate that fails the PAT will be prohibited from completing the selection process.

Interview with the Chief of Police:

The Select Board is the appointing authority for the Town of Tyngsborough.  The Chief of Police and Town Manager will conduct secondary interviews with selected candidates when an opening is ready to be filled and make recommendations to Select Board for appointment if all conditions for employment are completed.

Conditional Offer of Employment:

This contract is entered into between the candidate for hire and the Town of Tyngsborough.  This contract only extends to a candidate that is offered a position as a police officer.  Once signed, the department will agree to hire the candidate provided all “conditions” are met. All financial obligations relative to the conditional offer are borne by the Town of Tyngsborough.  The conditions are successful completion of the:

  • Background Investigation: which will be conducted by The Tyngsborough Police Department.
  • Medical Examination: a full medical examination, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Commonwealth of MA; including a drug screening.
  • Psychological Examination: the psychological may consist of a battery of written tests and interview(s) conducted by a trained psychotherapist.

Academy training:

Those candidates that require initial training will undergo all necessary steps for admission to the police academy.  The specific academy that the candidate will attend depends on multiple factors, but the selection is determined by the Chief of Police.

Field Training:  

Officers that successfully pass the academy will then begin their career with the department as a full-time patrol officer and must successfully pass a 10-12-week field training program (“FTO”).  The FTO program will serve to bridge the academy experience with actual police work. Candidates will be assigned to various veteran training officers throughout this period and will also be expected to successfully complete training, as well as know the department’s rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
